Final Exam Letter
Dear Driver with Bumper Sticker,
After noticing your
interesting bumper sticker, I felt the need to drop you this note. I am a current
September 11th was the
largest attack on our nation, killing almost 3,000; we will never be
the
same. With the passing of the PATRIOT
Act, tightening airport security, and heightening fear of attacks, some
civil
liberties have been compromised. I agree
a line needs to be drawn as to how far the government can limit our
civil
liberties, but giving up some for the benefit of all isn’t going to
hurt
anyone. Former Secretary of the Navy,
Frank Knox, once said, “I believe with all my heart that civilization
has
produced nothing finer than a man or woman who thinks and practices
true
tolerance (Dowell)." As our nation goes
through this period, I ask you to be tolerant of the changes in your
civil
liberties, but to always voice your opinion when the government
“crosses the
line.”
For example, the government should not be allowed to
perform searches in
one’s house without substantial reason because it is a direct violation
of the
Fourth Amendment. But, I do not believe
it is too much to ask to wait a few extra minutes in line at the
airport,
providing more security to all.Tolerance is a key factor in times of
crisis. We
are truly lucky to be living in a nation where we can speak out against
government’s actions and voice our own opinions, but at this time I ask
you to
remain tolerant and save your opinion for the times it really matters.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Domagalski
