ACSM ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

Title: The role of physical activity on chronic disease risk during pregnancy and postpartum

Short Abstract:

Research over the past 20 years has focused on the safety of physical activity during pregnancy. Guidelines for health care providers and pregnant/postpartum women have been developed from the results of these studies. The overwhelming results of most studies have shown that not only is physical activity not likely to negatively affect the pregnancy of a healthy gravida, but may also be beneficial to the maternal-fetal unit. Recently, researchers have begun to consider the role of physical activity in a more traditional chronic disease prevention light, for both mother and offspring. This roundtable is proposed to discuss current findings, and future directions that should be considered when studying the role of physical activity during pregnancy/postpartum on long-term health
