Exploring New Approaches to Understanding the Historical Experiences of Peoples in the Diaspora.™



How the Program is Structured.


The Comparative Black History Ph.D. Program brings together faculty and students in three or four areas around some common courses, one on comparative slavery and the other on comparative emancipation. The courses are taught by members of the Comparative Black History faculty with one professor assuming primary responsibility. The student must take a sequence of foundation courses and courses in three or four participating areas. Proficiency in a foreign language must be demonstrated prior to taking the comprehensive examinations. The final years of the program will be devoted to disseratation research and writing.
