What
are the admission requirements?
Students seeking admission to the Comparative Black History Ph.D.
Program must first: 1) complete the Application for Admission to
Graduate Study (available online @ http://www.grad.msu.edu/apply.htm)
and 2) request the registrar of each college or university attended
to send two copies of each transcript directly to:

In addition to meeting the university's admission requirements for
doctoral study, students must also meet the requirements for the
graduate work established by the history department. Admission to
the doctoral program in history is ordinarily limited to students
who have already received the Master's Degree in history, or who
are currently in the final term of the Masters of Arts degree program.
The deadline for doctoral applications is December 1. for admission
in the following fall semester. Applicants should submit Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) scores on the General Test; at least three
letters of recommendation from history professors with whom the
applicant has taken graduate courses; one or more term papers that
the applicant considers a fair representation of ability in research
and writing; and an intellectual autobiography and statement of
intent of 500-1000 words indicating the applicant's goal in pursuing
a doctoral degree.

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available. Appointments
are made annually on a competitive basis to both current and prospective
students. Assistantship applications must be submitted by December
1 to be considered for the following fall semester.
