of Peoples in the Diaspora.™
About
Us & Our Program
What is the Comparative Black History Ph.D. Program?
The Comparative Black History Ph.D. Program at Michigan State University
offers students a new approach to understanding the historical experience
of peoples of African descent in Africa and throughout the Western
hemisphere. The program trains scholars in the intricately connected
yet distinct cultures of these disparate societies. In a series
of foundation courses students explore the myriad ways that culture,
ideology, and racial politics both distinguish and unite the experiences,
reactions, and conditions of African peoples in different parts
of the New World.
Why did we establish the Comparative Black History Program?
The goal of the Comparative Black History Ph.D. Program is to produce
teachers, researchers, and historians who practice public history
with a specialization in African, African-American, Caribbean and/or
Latin American history. It emphasizes comparative methologies and
perspectives in the study of African descended people.
