Academic Scholars Program

Eligibility and Expectations

Membership in the Academic Scholars Program is by invitation only and is limited to approximately 200 incoming students per year.  Invitations are extended to high school students who have been admitted to MSU and who have a high school g.p.a. of 3.8 or higher on a 4-point scale and an ACT composite score of 28 or higher (or total SAT of at least 1240), or who have a high school g.p.a. of 4.0 or more on a 4-point scale and an ACT composite of 27 (or total SAT of at least 1210).

To receive Academic Scholars recognition on their transcript, students in the program must complete four enhanced courses and have a 3.0 or higher g.p.a. by the end of their second year.  The enhanced courses must include at least

1) one Honors course among the University's required general education classes (known as "Integrative Studies," in the social sciences, natural sciences, and arts and humanities, and abbreviated ISS, ISB, ISP, and IAH);

2) one additional Honors course in any area (such as freshman writing, other general education requirements, math or statistics, a course in the major, or an elective);

3) two additional enhanced classes which may be any of the following: Honors courses, Honors projects in regular classes (known as Honors Options), or courses that have been approved for Academic Scholars as substitutions for general education requirements.

Links to the list of Honors courses available to Scholars and of approved substitutions for Integrative Studies in any given year will be found on the Academic Scholars home page <http://www.msu.edu/~asp>, along with a checklist of the requirements and a set of Frequently Asked Questions.
