GSO Activities

GSO sponsors and organizes a variety of events either informally or through the Brown Bag and Social Capital committees. The purpose of these events is to expose faculty and students to new information and to promote the building of personal relationships between students, faculty, and staff. In addition, many students cooperate in activities outside the department, a few of which are profiled below.

Official Activities

Brown Bag Lunches - This is a series of speakers that are arranged by the Brown Bag committee. Speakers are usually Agricultural Economics faculty, staff, current students, or recent graduates of the department. Topics are diverse, but tend to center on informal presentation of research proposals or results or on developing trends in industry or agriculture.

Cook Co-op - The Cook Co-op has a variety of snacks and microwave meals for those days that students are working late or need a quick pick-me-up. There is a $5/semester fee to support the co-op's bulk purchases.  This small fee keep prices lower than snack machines and provides a better selection of such items for co-op members. Dues should be paid to the current GSO treasurer.

Annual Fall Gathering - This is GSO's biggest single event. Each fall a department wide social gathering is organized at a local park or the home of a faculty member. The GSO provides all coordination, set-up, take-down, and clean-up for the event. All faculty, graduate students and their families are invited to attend.

Bagel social (student-faculty coffees) - Occasional.  Graduate students, faculty and staff join together for coffee, bagels and conversation.  Cost is $1.50 for coffee, bagel, and cream cheese.

Happy hour - The last Friday of every month the GSO invites faculty and graduate students to meet at a local bar to reflect on the activities of the past month.
